PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the "above Council was held last evening. Present— The -Mayor, Crs. M'Kinlay, M«Gregor, Asher, Miller, and Dodson. Correspondence was read as follows :—From Mr R Donald, that if the street past his sectionj No. 348, was mode, there would be a great necessity of a retaining wall two chains in length being built under his property to"Vevent landslip. Referred to the Works Committee, with power to consult the solicitor. From Mr F. Hedger for permission to erect a verandah in front of his premises in George street. Granted, Bubje=t to; the usual conditions.—From Mr R. Roberts, asking the Council to re-consider his removal from the Town Belt, and offering to pay a rental of L 4 per annum. The offer was refused, but two months' extension of time ' was granted to remove off the Belt.—From Mr W. Thomson, calling the attention of the Council to the fact that they had taken possession of part of _his land in the Sawyer's Bay district for the purpose of laying down the: pipes leading from the Water Works Reservoir to Port Chalmers without having consulted him on the matter; also stating that it had been, his intention for some time of laying the said ground out as a township, and if he had bees consulted he would have been happy to &»v«» met the Corporation, and so arranged that the pipes leading through the property would have passed along a street, if at all possible as this would not have interfered with the value of the ground so much as it now does • and respectfully requesting the Corporation,' in fixing the amount of compensation to be granted him for the land so taken, to take this into consideration, his opinion being that the depreciation in value of aia property caused by the laying down of the water pipes is LSOO, and that sum he would be prepared to accept; also asking to be informed at an early date the viewß of the Council in this matter, and their intention with reference to his claim for water compensation,—The Mayoe made a few remarks in reference, to this le'ter, and said he was in hopes the Council would have been able to come to terms } but owing to the heav/ claim, demanded, he oould not entertain the gaJtna n On the motion of Cr. M*Gkboq« it was referred to the Waterworks Committee, The Finance Committee reported :—Jfo Bauohop and M'Kay's claim for refund of deposit of crossings, recommending that the refund be paid to the person producing the receipt given by the Town Clerk at time of deposit; that the account for advertising in the 'ProvincialGazette' be paid; that\he Solicitor hand over the Corporation town leases to the respective lessees on payment of LI Is each and outlay, and that the Clerk ! inform Captain Robertson that this has been agreed to j that the Clerk take immediate steps to recover all rents due over six months; that the Clerk furnish the Solicitor with a list of all out-Btanding accounts for kerbing, in order to recover the same; that the Clerk be instructed to give notice to ratepayers, by advertisement or circular, that all arrears of rates due after the 30th September will be recovered by process of law. The report was received and adopted. Cr. Asher laid the plans of the proposed baths on the table. The Clerk also; furnished*! report of the rateable properly in each ward. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee.

Mr G. Madigan's tender for leasing the recreation ground for grazing purposes for three years at L 7 per annum, was refused. It was resolved on the motion of Cr. AsHKßthat the Works Committee procure the necessary tools required by the Inspector of Works, and also that a temporary footpath be formed from Constitution street to Kaio lane until the street has been thoroughly sun-eyed.
