THE LADIES’ CHALLENGE SHIELD.
A meeting of officers of the various Dunedin Corps was held last evening to consider the matter of the Challenge Shield. Favorable replies were read to the Adjutant’s letter from Capt. Pillsnu, No. 1 Cluthn; Sub-Lieut. Pirie, Otepopo Rifles ; Capt. Mackhn, Queenstown; Capt. M'Rorie, Invercargill ; Capt. Henley, Arrowtowu ; and Capt. Andrew, East Taieri. Captain *iOrbell, Waikoxiniti Rifles, replied that his company, while approving of the Adjutant's letter, were of opinion that the successful company should have the shield in their possession for the ensuing twelve mouths. Erovided they bed a suitable place for it—a public all forinsta; ce; or, foiling that, that it remain in the district to which the successful company be. longed. It was suggests. that, the teams should consist of five men; and also that the match should take place in connection with and during the meeting of the Otago Rifle Association. The feeling of those present wus that the shield should remain in the district to which the successful company belonged till the next competition. The following resolutions were arrived atThat the following companies, Clutha (Nos. 1 and 2), Bruce, Taieri East, Taieri W. st. - Palmerston, Waikouaiti. Portohelln, Wukarj, South District, City Guards, North Dunedin, Arrillery, Port Chalmers Naval Brigade, and Dunedin Naval Brigade, be requested to contribute the sum pf L 4 each, and to appoint an officer to act for them in deciding the conditions on which the competition shall take place. The first meeting for that purpose to bo held in the Orderly Room at Dunedin on Tuesday, October 10 '* “ That any company declining to contribute the amount asked, said company shell bo debarred from competing.” The season proposed to be chosen is a most opportune one j and with the facilities of railway communication, the country corps named should find no difficulty in sending to town a competitive team. The advantage of railway communication was manifested at the associa. tion’s last annual meeting; and the interest which that competition seemed to i owaken in volunteer matches should be much increased now that there is promise of the addition of so valuable a trophy as that proposed to be shot for.
