THE PRESBYTERIAN SYNOD.

The Presbyterian Synod hold an ai kune ejfectuin meeting this morning at the First Chnrch. There were about sixty members present, including Profeasor Salmond, Drs Stuart and Copland, tho Revs. Will, Byley, Todd, Greig, Kirkland, Bussell. Waters, Allan, Blake, Stobo, Gow, Chisholm, Suther* land,Mookie, and Johnstone. Elders: Messrs E.B\ Cargill, A. C. Begg, J. Bennie, Beith, Stewart, and. Captain Thomson.

EJESOLUTIOKS as TO BUSINESS. It was resolved that the sitting hours should be from 11 a.n. to 3 p.m., and in the tveult from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.; no new business to bo takes after the latter hour.

It was decided that after a motion has been move< no member shall speak to the question for a longe time than fifteen minutes.

OFFICX-BBABERS. The Eev. Mr Allan was appointed Acting-Modem tor j the Bev. Mr Stobo, Acting-Clerk.

THE BUSINESS OF THE STNOU. Professor Salmond moved—" That the return from the Presbyteries and Kirk Sessions be res atid laid npon the table." • The Bev. Mr Will moved as an amendment--That returns having been received from Prcsby teries the returns from Kirk Sessions be now & Delved.”

A very lengthy discussion ensued, in which th.. question of the bearing of the Barrier Act was introduced. Several speakers objected to this Aov being brought in. The Bev. Mr Btxxt considered that if the re turns from Presbyteries were not read the Syno would perpetrate an act of injustice, and that man members would fvel themselves deeply, aggrieved The motion carried at lost session was that thi meeting be called to receive returns from Presbvteries—there was no mention of Kirk Sessions, r this present motion were carried it would prove;' means of widening the breach between the tw parties in the Synod. The Bev. |lr Gow said it seemed to him that th motion at the lost session simply sought to ohtaii the opinions of Kirk Sessions on the subject thramrs the Presbytery. Eventually Professor Salmond’s motion wa carried by 2a votes to 24, and the Synod adionme" till the evening sederunt. In view of the momentous question at issueChurch union—it was decided to meet at 6.30 pin lor special prayer.
