Mr Skene reports, for the week ending 9th inst., that everything is very slack in the labor market, more so than usual for the season: but a decided reaction may be counted on at any time now. With the opening season a few odd men are always needed for farm, station, and day labor. In town wants are few. Both in the building trade and ordinary business there is room for improvement. Female servants,, trained to ordinary work, are much needed, while dairy people are in good demand. Hotel bands are still very slack. Wages • Couples, 165 to LBO- shepherds, L6O and L7O: ploughmen, L 52 to L6O; dairy hands, 15s to 255; day labor, 7s, Bs, and 9s; houss girls, 10s to 15s; hotel do, 15s to 30a; carpenters, 10s to 13s ; boys, 6s to 10b ; shopmen, clerks, <fcc., 80s to 50a ; bushmen, 8s; dairymaids, 15s per week; gardeners, grooms, butchers, waiters, cooks, from 25s to 50s per week.
