Monday, September 11. (Before His Worship the Mayor and D. F. Main, Esq., J.P.)

Drunkenness. John Russell pleaded not guilty to a charge of being drank and disorderly while in charge of a horse and express, at noon on Saturday; and asked that the case might be adjourned to enable him to get witnesses and a solicitor.—lnspector Mallard did not wish to throw any obstacles in the way of the accused, but he was admitted to bail on Saturday evening, and if he desired would this have had an opportunity of bringing witnesses. Constable Johnson, Sergeant Anderson, and Sergeant-Major Sevan deposed that prisoner was too drank to be allowed in charge of a horse. He was fined 40s, in default 48 kosrs’ imprisonment.—On a second charge of furiously driving, he was fined in a like penalty,-—Russell: I suppose I can fetch this case on again ?—Mr Keeves: If you get drunk you can. (Laughter.)— Russell; But if I get witnesses to prove I was sober ?—Mr Reeves : This case is done with. You have been clearly shown to have been drunk. • Hugh M'Leod, Christian Roeaetter, Charles John it on (who was found lying at the Gaol gate) and Mary Anne M ‘Kenzie were all discharged, having been locked up since Saturday; John Leary was fined ss, m default, 24 hours’ imprisonment; George Henry Hughes, 40s, or 48 hours; Anna Maria Hawley, £5, or 14 days.
