Only two charges of drunkenness were heard at the City Police Court to-day, and the offenders, William Brannigan and Robert Archibald, were each fined ss, in default, twenty-four hours' imprisonment. Mr Birch, J.P., presided. At the Resident Magistrate's Court, Port Chalmers, this morning, before Mr Elder, J.P., Robert Henry, for drunkenness, was fined ss, with the usual alternative j James Hands was fined 20s, in default, forty-eight hours imprisonment, for a similar offence and tor being obstructive on the railway line.
On Monday the police at Oamaru arrested a man named John. Lewis Horn for forging and uttering a number of cheques, purporting to bear the signature of Messrs Fleming and Hedley, by whom he had at one time been employed. The 'Mail' says the forgeries were very cleverly executed.
The Hampden correspondent of the * North Otago Times' gives currency to a report very prevalent in the district that the piles in the Moeraki railway viaduct are of a very shoddy description. It is said that young saplings instead of good totara piles are being driven, which cannot last many years. J

A meeting of the students of the University, having for it» object the formation of a cricket club, was held in the Hall last evening; Mr Solomon, 8.A., occuping the chair. The meeting was very largely attended, and all those present gave in their names as members. A committee of officebearers, consisting of the following gentlemen, were elected : - S. Solomon, J. Hendry, E Hewat, J. M'Pherson ; captain pro tem., -. Solomon ; secretary and treasurer, T. 0. Faruij.
