CONTEMPORARY OPINION.

THE NEW MINISTRY. What Major Atkinson wanted, to secure for his Government any but an ephemeral was additional strength—the adhesion of men whoso political position, oxperience, and debating power would confer a prestige on the Government, and give it weight and influence with the Assembly. In this respect he has been fortunate. The aoci ssaion to officeof Mr Whitaker, MrOrmond, and the Hon. J. Hall will make the Treasury Benches far stronger than for the last two or three sessions. Mr Whitaker in particular is a great acquisition. No one holds higher rank among our public men, or stands better with the present House of Representatives, He will also bring with him to the support of the Government several of the Auckland votes. Mr Ormond is well known as an able administrator. He does not often take part in debate, but when he does is invariably one of the most effective speakers in the House. The Hon. J. Hall’s assistance will be most valuable, both in the Cabinet and in the Legislative Council. His presence in the Ministry will also serve to reassure the Southern members, who might otherwise, take alarm at Mr Whitaker’s opinions oh the land question. Altogether, Major Atkinson has formed a strong Government.—‘Press.’
