REALLY HARD UP.
Shakspeare says that one touch of Nature makes the whole world kin, and such touches are occasionally witnessed even in courts of law. On
Tuesday one named Davis sued the overseer of a station for ten days’ ’ wages. The overseer said that he owed nothing to the man, who had agreed to work for his tucker, and whom he had . allowed to do so for charity’s sake. The man was proceeding to give his evidence when he was interrupted by the Clerk of the Court, who asked for the hearing fee. He said he would pay
it when he got the money which was due to him, but the clerk, as in duty bound, insisted on the hearing fee being prepaid. Abthis stage it seemed as if the . ease would not be heard, and the overseer began to ask about the payment of his expenses in coming to town. He also inquired of Davis how he had got money to take out the summons. The reply was ; “I sold some of my clothes to do so j and now I am destitute. I have no money to buy food, I have no where to stay, I can get no work to do, and I have a wife and two children in Dunedin.” Hereupon his Worship said he would hear the case, the hearing fee notwithstanding \ but it was in the end decided against Davis on the evidence. It may be remarked that almost every working-man who appears in Court just now complains of poverty through general scarcity of employment.-— 4 Southland Times.’
