Passengers Mesdamea Wright and family, Smythiea; Misses Hoyte, Dennis, Hutchinson; Messrs Ward, Qnartley, Wright, Berry, Black, Hoyte, J. M. Shearer, Meuzies, Hingwood, Hoist; Californian Diamond Troupe (4): and four steerage. Jane Scelly, schooner, 50 tons, Soolly, from the Bluff. Frederick Bussell, barque, 342 tons, Molr, from Newcastle. SAILED. September I.—Taiaroa, s.s., 228 tons, Peterson, for Timarn. September 2.—Canny Soott, 328 tons, Blake, for Newcastle. The following is the list of the Taranaki’s passengers, which, from some unexplained cause, did not reach ns yesterday:—For Lyttelton—Mr and Mrs Davis, Messrs Hobson. Diummond, Mitchell, Logan, Coates, Meyer. For Wellington—Messrs Walter, Massey, Woodward, Jack, Larnaoh.M.H.B., Prior, Mast, Thacker. For Napier—Mr and Mrs Macdonald and five children. For Wanganui—Mr Gordon, For Mannkau—Meflsrs Power, Hesford, and Kettle* The basque West York completed the discharge of her inward cargo yssterday afternoon. The adhoafi* Maggie Paterson, which left this portqast Monday for Napier via Shag Point, put back yesterday afternoon, having been unable to taks ki cargo at the Point owing to the late strong winds and heavy sea. The ketch Jaysie, having received a thorough overhaul, was tdken off Fletcher’s slip yesterday afternoon.
The Union Company’s steamer Beautiful Star, from Moeraki, arrived shortly before midnight, and steamed past the port to Dunedin. The Union Company’s s.s. Wellington, with cargo and passengers from Northern ports, rrrived at eight this morning, and steamed alongside the ship William Davie to discharge 182 bales of wool and 53 casks of tallow. She left the hlanukau at 3 p.m. oh the 26tfti ult.. Nelson at 2.15 p.m. on the 30th, Wellington at 3.30 p.m. next day, and Lyttelten ('where she arrived at 9.30 a.m. ycstercuw) at 2 p.m., having experienced variable winds from the Manukau to Lyttelton, thenee to arrival westerly winds. Passed the company’s s.s. Taranaki last evening. We thank her purser, Mr M’Cormiok, for report and Northern exchanges. The Nelson papers say that the striking of the Hawea on a sunken rock off Jackson’s Head was a very trifling affair. The captain, engineer, chief officer, ana carpenter made a declaration at the Custom-house to the effect that the vessel had sustained no injury. It is conjectured, as this hitherto unknown rock (which lies right in the fairway about a third of the way across the Sound from Johnson Head) is situated very near the spot where the Eangitoto was wrecked, that the same rock may have been the cause of that catastrophe. The schooner Jane Scolly, from the Bluff, arrived this morning, and passed tbo port to Dunedin. The barque Frederick Bossell, with a cargo of coals and coke, arrived off the Heads this morning and was towed up (o an anchorage off Corey Bay by the Geelong. She left Newcastle on the 17th mt. with a westerly wind, which continued until the next day, when it shifted to the S.W., increasing to a terrific b alo, which drove her as far north us Lord Howe’s Island on the 21st. For two days sbe experienced northerly winds, which then shifted to the S.W., when it blew furiously, with tremendous seas, one Of which struck the vessel carrying away part other bulwarks on both sidos. Afterwards bad moderate winds, passing the Solanders on the 31st, Dog Island yesterday morning, and the Nuggets at noon, and arriving as above. Captain Moir reports passing the barque Feronla and brig Transport off the Nuggets.
