Melbourne, September 1. It is stated that the Government intend calling upon Steavenson, Secretary for Railways, to return and refute the charges alleged against him. September 2. The understanding .which existed among the Banks is coming to a rupture, owing to the Bank of New South Wales requiring certain alterations in the Bank’s clearing hours in regard to bills and other minor matters. Notice of withdrawal on Tuesday was given, but the Bank authorities have been requested to refrain from immediate action pending further consideration. Messrs Whitney, Chambers, and Co’s total liabilities are nearly L 90,000, but the deficiency will not amount to more than L 33,000. Arrived: Alhambra, from New Zear land.

Adelaide, Sept. 2, Mr T. M. Bagot’s total liabilities are L 107,000 ; the assets are less than half that amount.
