Christchurch, August 29. At a conference of Chairmen of Koad Boards this afternoon, the Counties Bill was discussed, and resolutions to the following effect were adopted That the Government proposal is unsatisfactory ; that Canterbury be divided into three Counties -(1) North of Rakaia, (2) Rakaia and Rangitata, (3) Rangitata to Waitaki; that each road board return one member to the County Council; the County rate roll to be made up from the road board rate roll by road board machinery 5 that the chairmen of the County Councils be elected by the members ; that rates not county rates, tolls, and fees,’ go to road boards ; Counties to distribute the residue of the land fund and special grant; that Counties have power to raise loans with annual sinking funds, that relations be vested in trustees, tint gravel I reserves be handed over to road boards, that
slaughter-houses and pounds be handed over to road boards, that 25 per cent, of tbe land revenue be secured to tbe road district in which it arises, that the residue of the land fund be expended in accordance with'subsection 7, clause 9, of Provincial Abolition Financial Arrangements Bill; that the, present balance in the Provincial Treasury be apportioned to road districts in proportion to area and rates collected during the past twelve months ; that the river boundaries of Counties be from the bank instead of from the centre of the river.

Balclutha, August 30. Sergeant Daly this evening received a telegram from Constable Hughes, dated from Clinton, stating that the body of the boy M‘Lenan, who was drowned in the Pomahaka on Sunday, has been recovered. It now lies at Clydesvale, and an inquest will be held.
