Express arrived at Port Chalmers this forenoon with passengers and cargo from the Bluff, and steamed alongside the ship William Davie to tranship wool. The steamers Beautiful Star and Wanganui, for the Bluff, sailed last evening. The p.s, Samson arrived last evening from Oamaru. After landing a few sheep at the Old Jetty she steamed np to Dunedin The barque Feronia, with a cargo of coal from Newcastle, was towed up yesterday afternoon by the tug Geelong, and berthed alongside the hulk flak to discharge. She left Newcastle oh the sth inst. with a strong W. wind, which continued until the 14th, when it shifted to the S.E. Passed Preservation Inlet on the evening of the same day, aud was abreast of Stewart's Island on the 16th, experioncing N.E. winds with thick hazy weather until the 19th, when it veered round to the S.E. and increased to a heavy gale accompanied with high sea, which compelled her to beave-to the same night thirty-five miles S.E. of Otago Heads. During the gale a heavy sea broke on board, and stove in one of the boats, besides carrying away part ef the bulwarks. The gale moderated shortly after m dnight; thence light westerly winds until arriving off the Heads yesterday. Captain M‘William reports sighting a barque yesterday forenoon, twenty-five miles N.E. of this port.; Messrs M'Meokau Blackwood's s.s. Alhambra, for Melbourne via the Bluff, took her departure this afternoon from the railway pier. The Union Company’s steamer Taiaroa arrived early this morning from Timaru, and steamed past the port to Dunedin,
The Union Company’s s.B. Taupo, with cargo and forty.nme passengers, returned to port shortly after nine this morning from her usual trip to Northern Ports. She left Onehunga at 9.30 a.m. on the 19th ; Taranaki at 7.30 a.m. next day; Nelson at 930 a m on the 21st; Pioton at 10 a m. od the 22nd, having been detained owing to a dense fog ; Wellington at A3op.m.; and Lyttelton at 3.30 p.m. yesterday. Experienced flue weather during the passage. We thank Mr Ponsonby (purser) for report and exchanges. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Bluff, August 23.—Arrived: 7 a.m., Biagarooma, from Melbourne; 10 a.m., Beutiful Star, and at 11.45 a.m.. Wanganui, both from Dunedin.
