SUPERIOR EDUCATION.

To the Editor.

Sir,—Your correspondent "P." says that three out of the four youths who passed the New Zealand University examination were from Christ's College, Canterbury. "P." then asks, "Is it to be wondered at that parents here send their sons to Christchnrch College ?" In reply, I would say that if you " put the saddle upon the right horse" the people of Otago are themselves to blame. How many attempts have been made to provide superior education by private enterprise and ended in failure, simply because the people will not pay the price ? Education can be had in Dunedin equal to the best in the Colony, so far as teaching power is concerned; but where are suitable buildings to come from T It is scarcely credible that among the excellent buildings conspicuous in Dunedin there is not a suitable one to be had for a private school. Where is the man or body of men able to wipe away this reproach? I say that the indifference to the educational advantages of the rising generation is a disgrace to the wealthy and prosperous City of Dunedin, and will sooner or ater prove the fact that money is not the chief wealth of a people. If Canterbury takes the lead of Otago it will be the result of superior education, for education is the secret of a people's greatness.—l am, &c,

0. P. Q. Dunedin, August 21.
