A_ fair amount of business has been transacted during the week. Several transactions have taken place in tea. Importers, with, a desire to close shipments, have been offering at slightly reduced prices. News received yesterday by telegraph of an advance in China will most likely have some effect in hardening paces again. Grey sugars are inquired for, and the stock of this class is found to be low. Best yelk»w<i are also scarce, and command L3B; greys are worth L 34 to L3i 10s. There is no change in spirits. The arrival of the Ada Wiswell from America brings a small supply of kerosene, but is not likely to affect prices. Oats are better, and s'les have been made at Is lOd. Butter has sustained a further decline, and may be quoted at Is Id.

THE LABOR MABKET,

Mr Skene reports that the labor market is still quiet. The season has scarely arrived for activity, and winter weather is not suited for pushing wirk. The building trade is far from idle. Farm and country people need never be at a loss for work. Couples of experience are in fair demand. Female servants trained to plain work are scarcer than evor. Storemen and clerta are foolish to come here. Boot machinists are scarce. Sawmill and bush work is slowly reviving. Wages—Couples, L 65 to L 80; ploughmen, L 52, L 55, and L6O; day labor, 78, Bs, and 9s ; grooms, gardeners, &c., 25a to 30s; house girls, 10s, 12s, to 20s; hotel do, 13s, 15s, 20s, and 308; dairy hands, 15s and 20s; storemen and clerks, 30s to 50s.
