DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB.
The annual meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club was held in the Empire Hotel last evening. The Preside, t (Mr J. Stephenson) occupied the chair, and about thirty members were present. The Secbbtaet (Sir S. James) read the following; , REPORT OF IBS COMHITTKE.— " Your Committee have pleasure in congraoulating the members of the Club upon the success wliich 1-as attended their efforts for the promotion 01 lacing for the past year. The usual three meetings .have been held, and hare brought together large fields of horses. The starting of fifteen horses for one race, which took place for the Dunedin Cup in March last, has been hitherto unexampled in New Zealand, and shows that this race is now regarded as' the race of the season' in the Colony. Indeed, the large influx of strangers to the Province during the annual meeting is in itself sufficient evidence of the fac , and your Committee woul I recommend to their successors that the stakes for this race should be increased to LSOO.
" Your Committee have daring their year of office instituted the Dunedin Derby, believing that races of this description do more to promote the breed of good, sound horses, in cont-adist notion to the weeds often seen upon a race course, than any other race. The nominations—29 for 1877, and 40 for I>7B —may be regarded as an unqualified success. " Your Committee regret that they are at present unable t» report that satisfactory arrangements have been made with the Forbury Park Company, by which the Ulub could secure the permanent use of the Park; negotiations are still pending, which they truit may be successful. "The present position of the Club, as will be Been by the balance-sheet annexed, must be a matter of congratulation to .he members and the public generally, its assets being L 1.651 Is 8d: and liabilities, with the exception of the sum of LIU Ss to the Derbys, being nil. It must, however, be borne in mind that in the event of the negotiations now pending with the Forbury Park Company being carried to a successful issue, considerably more than the available cash balance will be required for a new Grand Staud, &c.
