CITY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the City Council was held this «fternoon; present, the Mayor and a full Counil.
A letter was loccived from Messrs Bathgate and Buchanan forwarding a claim for Ll6 for the loss °l * horse by Mr Codlin in consequence of the alleged unsafe condition of Union street. The Council decided to reply to the effeot that it had no responsibility. A memorial from residents ia George street for the drainage of their property was teceivedaud referred to the Works Committee with power to act. A petition from residents in Royal terrace for certain repairs was referred to the Works Committee. On being called np«n to move the motion stand* ing in liis name in favor of the election of Mayor being by tho City Council in place of by the citizens as hitherto, Cr. Fisb said that, on reflection, he bad come to the conclusion, seeing the matter was one involvlug a change in what had been the law hitherto, that it would be wider to refer the question to the citizens before adopting such a change. (Applause.) Ho therefore asked leave to withdi aw the motion. iThe motions standing in Cr. Isaacs name re tramways were allowod to stand over till next meeting. The Public Works Committee recommended, inter alia*, that a brick sewer be constructed along Uni n street, from George street to tha Water of Leith, similar to the St. David street sewer, at an estimated cost of LI ,300. That n > further reduction be made in the level of lower Carglll street, as it is not cotsiderod safe to interfere with the surface of the street, the ground being of an unsafe character. That the railway authorities be requested by the Council to remove the gates from the railway crossing, Rattray street. That Rattray street be formed by the Corporation so far down as the property abutting that street is rated or assessed by the Corporation; the Provincial Government and Otago Harbor Board to complete the remainder of the Btreet. A j eply has been ordered to the Town Council of South Dunedin that the Council cannot accept their surv-y, showing an encroachment by the Dun. edin Corporation gasworks property on the line of Cargill read, as corre t; a'so tbat steps will be taken to remove any nuisance caused by stagnant water at the old manure depot section. Ro motion No. 353. as to the lowering of Stafford street, near Melville street, the committee having ful y considered the subject, cannot recommend the Council to undertaka the works. Messrs Matheson Uros.'s tender for works at Victoria street has been accepted; amount, LIBO Is Bd. Cr. Campbell has been elected chairmnn of the committee. It was agreed that tho clause dealing with the Union street sewer should be struck out.
