At the City Police Court this morning, before Dr Nivcn and Mr Thomas Birch, J.P.'s, the former remarked that cases of drunkenness, in which the offenders were not known to the police, were becoming so frequent, that they found it necessary, instead of discharging the offender, to impose a small fine, although n, dismissal might be granted when the accused had been in custody from Saturday night to Monday morning. Accordingly, Thos. Pvolunson and John Stewart—whose offences made up the charge-sheet were each lined 5s or twentyfour hours' imprisonment.
t The monthly meeting of the' Colonial Bn" 14mg Society will be held in the offices, i'rinoes B"reet, on Monday evening at 7 o'clock. A second degree meeting will ba held at the Breik 0' Day (1.0 G.T.) lodge, Anderson's Bay, on Monday evening at 7.30. Dr Dick will lecture, under the auspices of the Dunedin Youug Men's Christian saocia turn, on Monday evening at 7.30, at the rooms of the Association.
Amongst the speakers at the Queen's Theatre services to-moro*- evening is the Mr "owie, recently arived from England as Chinese missionary, and who will probtbly give tome account of his work in China.
