CITY POLICE COURT.

Thursday, August 3. (Before Dr Niven, J.P., and T. Birch, Esq., J.P.) Stealing from a Clothes-line.—George Smith, a sailor, was charged on the information of Anna Davis with having, on the Ist August, stolen a jacket and petticoat, her property, valued at 10s.—Mrs Davis resided in Walker street, and was in the yard at the time the offeree was committed. She saw accused, in company with a woman, come alongside the fence and deliberately reach over and take the above-mentioned articles. She saw accused without his seeing her, but she made him aware of her presence by crying out not to take the things. Accused then threw the articles down upon the ground, saying that he did not intend to take them; but Mrs Davis was sure that such was not his intention.—Sergeant Anderson said he had known accused, for about eight months. Occasionally he did a little work about the jetties, but altogether bis character was a had one, he being an associate of low people.—lnspector Mallard stated that accused had requested Mrs Scott, the woman who was in his company, to appear as a witness. Tho police, too, had done so, but she had uot made an appearance, probably thinking that by doing bo she would become implicated in the crime. The Inspector further stated that he hoped their Worships would inflict a severe punishment in this case, as this kind of offence was becoming very prevalent throughout the City.—Their Worships agreed with Inspector Mallard, and sentenced accused to fourteen days' imprisonment. Maintenance.-—John Charles Davis was charged with not complying with an order granted by the Christchurch Bench for the maintenance of his wife and child.—The accused was remanded in custody till this day week, to enable Inspector Mallard to obtain information as to the date when the order was granted,
