SECOND EDITION.
THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
The second election for the Mayoralty of Dunedin for the year ending August 1877 took place to-day, and occasioned considerably more interest than any municipal election which has taken place here for many years. The fact that only Messrs Reeves and Woodland—each of whom had tied on the former occasion—had been placed in nomination appeared to put additional zest into the proceedings; and no means were spared to oring electors to the pollingbooths. The committees of the rival candidates were most indefatigable in their exertions to secure votes. Nearly every available vehicle was brought into use ; while one of the candidates had secured a four-in-hand. It was generally understood that Mr Reeves had secured the votes of the aristocrats, Irish qitigens, and lioman Catholics; Mr Woodland those of the Orangemen, working classes, Oddfellows, and the Jewish fraternity, while the publicans' interest was divided. As four o'clock—the hour at which the poll closes approached, the prooeedin.es Became unusually interesting, and the vicinity of the polling booths was the scene of considerable excitement. The City Council Chambers, where the votes are made up, was literally besieged an hour Jatter, and as the returns were handed in from the various wards quite a rush was made for the scrutineers to ascertain the position of affairs. Shortly after half-past live o'cleck the ('own Clerk (Mr Massey) declared the result of the polling to be;—
