Auckland, August 2. It is placed beyond doubj that Bass, about whose supposed loss overboard from the steamer Taranaki an inquiry was held by the Collector of Customs, has turned up safe.
Hokitika, August 3. Luke Moore, schoolmaster, has been convicted at the district court of two charges of criminal assault on childen under twelve years of age. He pleaded guilty to a third charge and was sentenced to two periods of imprisonment of six years each, and two floggings during the first six months.
Wellington, August 3. It is stated that great reductions will be made in the Estimates, and that some four hundred General and Provincial Government officers will lose their appointments, and probably the Volunteer vote for the South Island will be struck off.
Grauamstown, august 3.
