Chkistchurch, August I.' At thgfceetlng of the Drainage Board, Mr Bell, engineer, said that, according to calculations he had made, the discharge of sewage and artesian water in Christchurch amounted to 240 gallons per head; of population every twenty-four hours, and that nine-tenths ; of the artesian water. was ; running to waete; qlso. that as now wells were sunk the old ones rapidly decreased in supply. It was resolved - to apply to the General Assembly for power .to exercise control over artesian/Wells. with a view to prevent waste. ’ ..

At a,meeting of chairmen of Road Boards for the purpose of discussing the Govemment policy a resolution was proposed that the .proposals... respecting . the , creation of County Boards are unsatisfactory,, as providing cumbersome -machineay for discharging duties which Road Boards are quite able to undertake. . Opinion for and- against the resolution was about equally divided, and it was ultimately , resolved to adjourn the ihatter until after , the Second reading of the Counties BiU. : • '

The thoroughbred entire' Barbarian has been sold to M* Hayward Of the' The horse leaves .by ,the .next trip of the steamer Wellington. ■ ; At the annual meeting, of the New Zealand Shipping Company, held .at noon to-day, there was a large attendance. The report, as already, telegraphed,' was unanimously adopted. The Chairman said the dividend of 8 per cent, provided for in the'report would be payable at all offices of the company in the Colony fin Wednesday next. The chairman, in reply to a question, said the profits for the year had been equal to 22£ per cent, on the paid up capital; that there was L 68,523» due on five ships, but eight were unencumbered; that he was almost positive that it would not be necessary to call up further capital, but that if more capital was required the directors would use the power given them to issue debentures, and shareholders would be consulted before more calls were made. It was expected that the three ships how building would enable the company to carry on till the next annual meeting without chartering any vessels. Thefollpwing gentlemen were re-elected directors': ■Mr J. L. Campbell, Auckland.; Mr'J. Johnston, Wellington; Messrs W. Reeves, S. S. Revans, J. Studholme,, and O. W, Canterbury. Hie meetingwas very unanimous, and evidently well pleased with the state of the company’s affairs.-
