The Union Company’s steamer Beautiful Star returned from her Oamoru trip on Saturday evening, A-O'v a short stay alongside the" railway pier she steamed up to Dunedin to discharge. The s.s. Taiaroa came down from Dunedin and moored at the head of the Graving Dock, in readiness to be taken iu to be cleaned and re-coated ns fi»on as the barque James Banned comes out. Messrs M’Mcckan, Blackwood’s s.s. Avnwnta. from Nelson, via Wellington and Lyttelton, arrived at 8.30 n.m. ves’erday. She left Nelson on the 27th ,F“led Wellington and Lyttelton. We thank Mr Miller (purser) for report and exchanges. ’ The A' awata took her departure again this afternoon w;th the outgoing Suez mail for Melbourne, via the Bluff.
ihe s.s. Wanganui, with cargo and passengers from the Bluff, arrived at Port Chalmers last evening. She left the Bluff at 530 p.m. on Saturday, and encountered a strong N,E. gale with heavy sea along the coast.

The keteh Alpha put back on Saturday evening. The.scheoner Pioneer, from Oamaru, arrived on Saturday afternoon, and passed the port ©f Dunedin with a strong N.E. breeze. Mr H Bennett is, we learn, about to cease to act as provider© for the Union Company’s vessels. The company intend doing their own providoring. Mr Bennett was offered, but refused an engagement as superintendent.— l Argus.’ The Union Company's steamer Samson, bavin-* been cleaned and overhauled, wn, taken out of Murray s floating desk t his morning, when the schooner Hosannah Rose took her place. Compared with the performances of ordinary sail nig slops possessing no extreme clipper ounlitior the recent 100-doy voyage of the London to Auckland, may be regarded ts a vc~s protracted one. Compared with some of her own voyages, however.it must be considered a CC o.i ave-age rua. True she once reached a New Zealand port from London iu 101 days, but dminnthat voyage a chain of more than ordinary favorable circumstances must have attend'd the vessel from the time she left the docks till she arrived on this coast. Under similar conditions a China tea clipper would most probably have made the run in little more than half the Bebmgton s time.
