Hokitika, July 29. At a crowded public meeting in the Town Hall—the Mayor in the chair —to consider the state of the Hokitika River, the following resolnt : ons were carried “ That it is highly necessary for the safety of the port that all the water of Hokitika River be concentrated in one channel; that the Borough Council be requested to take the advice of a competent engineer with regard to the advisability of making a wingdam at or near the point where the old wingdam stood, for the purpose of turning the water running down the north channel into the lagoon, and that the Borough Council be requested to spend such money as necessary to give effect to the opinion of the meeting; and that if a Hirbor Trust be appointed, the money expended be refunded to the ratepayers ” A committee was appointed to confer with the Borough Council on the subject.
