RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT, PORT CHALMERS.

LAftClHY.—Thomas Griffin Green was charged with stealing, on the 26th June, twelve pairs of trousers, of the Value of L 9, the property of John Miller, and pleaded not RUilty. ~ John Miller, said he was a draper residing .in George street. On the 26th of last month he missed twelve pairs of Colonial tweed * trousers from the door of his shop. He recognised the four pairs produced as portion of the twelve pairs, which were tied together in the original package as received from the warehouse. The value of the twelve pairs were L9.—By accused : Witness last saw the trousers outside his shop door on the afternoon of tha 26th ult, and did not miss them- that evening. He did not see a man named Brown about the shop during the afternoon or evening.—Andrew M'Donald, seaman, residing in Fort Chalmers, said he knew the accused. On Saturday, Ist July, accused asked him to purchase two pairs of .trousers. He had not the trousers with [ him at the time, but said he would Igo and get them. After being away about a quarter of an hour, prisoner returned to the waterman's house with the trousers tied up in a cotton handkerchief. Witness was to give him LI for the two pairs. The two pairs produced were similar to those he bought.-*-By accused: There was no one present when I agreed to purchase them, but a man named Wilson was present when you gave me the parcel.—John May, fisherman, deposed to purchasing two pair of trousers from accused.—After hearing the evidence of Detective Neil, the accused was committed for trial.
