THE CHORAL SOCIETY.

To the Editor, ./.-..'. Sir, attending the rehearsals had caused much dissatisfaction." It will not be altogether out of place for me, as a performing, memof the Choral Society, to add a few riders to this freely-given verdict. What produces uncertainty sooner than that npon which no reliance is to be placed ? I will not -go so far back in my remarks as to refer to what persons infer, but will treat of what is easy to diagnose ; still, at the same lime, I shall be quite open to admit that I have misjudged appearances should the cap not fit. Wow may I ask, when the University Hall was so continuously used by such gatherings as Knox's Bazaar, Christian' Brothers' ditto, and above all postponements in re De Murska, what attempts were made, either by secretary or conductor, to' prevent the performers from night after night being made fools of in the way of coming two ana three miles to attend, only to find that there was no practice? And when there were practices, what times did they begin? Come at eight, and by good luck and hard running begin at 8.45, p.m. That, of course, is near enough for a man who has asserted as his excuse in -his'part of the business that his resignation had been before' the committee a twelvemonth ! A conductor is but the fifth wheel to the coach when he has succeeded in playing the fool with the working body—the performers. Lastly, candidly speaking, is the present conductor noted for his punctuality, and if he is, where does it come in ? There is but one-way to get out of this difficulty, and that'is, the office must be made a matter of £ s d before it will pay the conductor to be otherwise than what he is now.—l am, &c, A Snubbed Performer. Dunedin, July 20. -'.."'."
