RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Wednesday, Jttly 19. - (Before T. A. Mansford, Esq., R.M.) George Bell v. A. J. S. Gibbs and others.— Claim forXB 10s for advertising the prospectus of the Utago General Furnishing Company in the Evening Star. Mr Hodgkins apppeared for the plaintiff; Mr Brentipr defandaut.—The prospectus had been advertised by Messrs Stewart and Doughty, agents for the. campany, and defendant was sued on account of his name appearing as one of the provisional directors.—Evidence was given by Mr Doughty that some eighteen months ago" he waited on defendant, who applied for twenty-five shares, ' and offered no objection to his name appearing as one of the directors.—For the defence it was urged that defendant not having directly authorised the insertion, although his name appeared as a director without any objection being made bj him, could not be held liable for the debts of the promoters.—Judgment was reserved.
