CITY COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the City Council, being the last meeting of the present body, was held this afternoon. Present: The Mayor (Mr H. J. Walter), Crs. Gibson, Grant, Beeves, Woodland, Cnmpbel', Leary, Quick, Mollison, Isaac, and Brown. QUESTION OF PRIVILEGE. Cr Reeves wished to make a personal explanation bordering very much on a breach of privilege of tne Council, and which matter had emanated front the Chairman. It was with much regret that be had to refer to it, but when he placed the matter before his Worship, and tho latter had found that he had made the assertion complained of without any ►rounds for no doing, he no doubt would withdraw the statements aud regret having need the woras ho did. Ho iioticod in this paper a speech made by the Mayor last ni^ht— — Gr - , Isaac rose to a point of order. He con Adored thoywere going out of the way of the business ofthe Council altogether, and should not allow comment on an electioneering speech. He asktd the Mayor to mlo Cr. Beeves out of order, and ho trusted the Council would support him in his moving.
T.ie May< b thought that Cr, Beeves should he allowed latitude to make his statement, and trusted that the explanation might be made without discussion. • ■
