We are compelled to hold over a quantity of local matter and correspondence till tomorrow's issue.
A match between sides chosen by Earlier and Treseder from members of the Union Football Club was played at tbe Northern Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon. A correspondent writes drawing our attention to a shocking act of cruelty to a horse committed a few days ago by a drayman near tbe Kensington brick-works. Tbe writer states that the driver battered tbe horse brutally about tbe nose with kicks. Complaint should be made to the police authorities.
Notwithstanding the threatening appearance of the weather, a fair sprinkling of hockey players assembled on Saturday afternoon at Montecillo. Several goals were played, and all engaged appeared to thoroughly enjoy tbe sport, though the game was rather onesided, the Captain’s team winning by six goals to one. Some very good play was shown by Maefarlane, M ‘Neill, Johnston, Knlton, and others. Though the sport was good, the game-would have been more even bad all the players been armed with good clubs, but several had come up unprovided, scarcely expecting to find a muster on so unprnpitious a day, and had to content themselves with such sticks aa could be found.

At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Port Chalmers, this morning, before Mr T. A. Mansford, R.M., a seaman of the ship Zvileika was charged with desertion. Tim accused. who pleaded guilty, was ordered to oc put on board his ship.

The subscrip- '_ or the new association was fixed at 10s fid per annum, which entitles members to admission to all matches held under the supervision of the association. The followmg officers were elected : President, Mr w \» 1 * son ; cc -Fres;dents, Messrs and J. Rattray; Hon. Sec., ™ r *L V; Evft J Committee, Messrs Lathbury, H. Godby, Collmson, Tait, Kettle, and Beal. Mr Eva (secretary) then read the offer from the Melbourne agent of the All England Eleven, and this being thought reasonable it was resolved that it be accepted. After those present had subscribed qver L 25 towards the amount required the meet'ng separated.
