THE MAYORALTY.

To the Editor.

—The present Mayor evidently intends to give the electors an opportunity of deciding the question whether the Mayoral office should be a rolling one or not. Having tasted the sweets of office (L4OO a-year, &c.), he does not' believe in relinquishing the honorable post without a tough straggle. Now, what has he specially done that warrants his re-election as Mayor of Dunedin ? There are several of our Councillors who have equal claims with Mr Walter to the office. Mr Reeves has faithfully served the City without any remuneration for a considerable time, and why should he not be elected as Mayor for once ? He contested the election with Mr Walter last year, but the latter gentleman had fought Mr Keith Ramsay for the Mayoral office on the previous occasion. Sympathy with Mr Walter as a defeated candidate no doubt resulted in his election. The gentlemen who volunteered to pay or collect his election expenses if he were defeated by Mr Reeves, no doubt worked very hard for him. I think the electors should choose one of the present Councillors as Mayor ef the Ci'.y, and decide to give the preference to Mr Reeves.—l am, &c., Gratitude. Dunedin, July 8.
