New Plymouth, July 8. The charges of dynamite placed under the Paterson wreck at the Waitara were fired to-day. The sight was grand, a volume of water being thrown to a great height. On the second charge being fired large plates of iron and pieces of timber were thrown into the* air about 100 ft. The third shot fired had a good effect, and little of the wreck was then visible. On Monday the embedded portion will be blown up.

Wellington, July 10. There were eleven cases in the Supreme Court this morning. One was •. charge of rape, the rest mostly larceny cases. While the Court was being opened, Daniel Veefe, the «rier, fell down dead. This is the third Eerson in this Province within a month who as died in the same way.

Oamaru, July 10. A fire broke out last night on the premises cf Mr Riordan, stationer and tobacconist. It was first discovered in a small cupboard under-the stairs. Riordan, who was sleeping up above, made his escape through a window on to a neighboring roof. The stock was insured for L3OO in the New Zealand office. There was a policy of LIOO on the furniture in the same office, andL2oona safe. The police are in possession, and an inquiry is to be held. Not long ago Riordan’s shop was broken into and a sum of money stolen, but the police were not able to arrest the perpetrators of the robbery.
