ALLEGED CATTLE STEALING
After we went to press yesterday evening the jury in the case of Richard Nelmes and Henry Frances returned a verdict of not guilty, and prisoners were discharged.
OBTAINING GOODS BY FALSE PRETENCES,
Sim Chee, a Chinaman, was indicted for having on the 10th Maroh last obtained from one James Askell, by means of false pretences, articles of clothing to the value of L 73 5s 9d.
Ah Wah. acted as interpreter, and Mr E. Cook appeared for accused. Evidence Avas given that after accused had obtained the goods he went insolvent, and prosecutor received no payment for the .goods. It was admitted, in evidence for the prosecution, that prisoner had a subcontract from the manager for Culling and Munro.
Hia Honor directed an acquittal, and the jury found prisoner not guilty, without leaving the box.

SHEEP AND CATTLE STEALING.
Martin Birch was indicted for having on the 16th April stolen one bull stag, the progerty of Robert M'Morran, of Queenstown. [e was defended by Mr E. Cook. The jury, after a few minuteß deliberation, returned a verdict of guilty. The sume prisoner was then further charged with having on the 6th May stolen three sheep, the property of James Hardy Lawton.
Ho pica Jed gu;lly. There were two" other charges against him, one for cattle-stealing auxl the other for
sheep-stealing, but the Crown Prosecutor said that he would enter a nolle prosequi in regard to them.
Tue prisoner, on being called upon for sentence, said that his age was twenty-eight. His Honor said that the prisoner was not convicted of a single isolated case of sheep or cattle-stealing, but it appeared that it was a practice with him. The sentence of the Court was three years' imprisonment, with hard labor, on each indictment, the sentences to be concurrent.
The Court then adjourned till 10 a.m. on Monday, when the Civil List will be commenced.
