Pome scandals have arisen in connection with the Land and survey Departments in Canterbury, and the Ministry have elected to advise the Governor to appoint a Royal Commission.to investigate the whole subject, and report thereon. We ('Post') gather from the voluminous correspondence on the subject that so far back as June, 1875, the following charges were made by certain members of the Canterbury Provincial Council against the Survey Department, viz. :—lst. The bad state and condition of the maps and records. 2nd. The incorrectness of the maps. 3rd. Persistence by the Survey Department in known errors. 4th. Undue exercise of patronage by the chief surveyor. The Provincial Executive, in conformity with a resolution passed by the Council, applied to the Superintendent to move his Excellency the Governor to appoint a Royal Commission to investigate the matter.
