cerely thanking contributors in cash, goods, and otherwise to the Carnival, including the ladies and gentlemen who gave their services gratuitously in assisting at the entertain ment and in the disposal of the gooda by means of the Bruce auction.

A special vote of thanks was accorded to Messrs Guthrie and Larnach for gratuitously placing at the disposal of the Committee, and at much personal inconvenience, their extensive premises, and otherwise aiding the Committee in carrying out its benevolent purpose. It was also resolved that the whole sum of LI, 500 be handed over to the committee of the Benevolent Institution, with a suggestion that upon the subsidy being obtained from the Government they would consider the propriety of investing not less than twothirds of the amount as a permanent endowment for the Institution.

The proceedings concluded with the presentation of a valuable timepiece to Mr W. S. Douglas, hon. sec. to the committee, in consideration of the kindness and able services he rendered them, and of the fact that he refused to accept any remuneration for his labors. The clock bore a suitable inscrip tion. Mr Douglas acknowledged the gift, remarking that he had never worked with any committee of which the member were more in earnest in what they took in hand.
