The Evening Star WEDNESDAY, JULY 5, 1876.

Owing to the large amount of Parliamentary intelligence in this evening’s issue we are compelled to hold over a quantity of local matter, including the report of to-day’s meeting of the Waste Land Board. The usual Weekly meeting of St. Matthews \ outig Men’s Association was held last evening. The president, the Rev. Mr Fenny, being absent, Mr l-tnowlcs (vicepresident) took the chair. An interesting paper was read by Mr Knowles on the “ Pur! suit of Knowledge.”

the monthly meeting.of the Otago Institute held last evening, Mr Skey in the chair, the following new members were elected :-Messrs Squires, Christophers, and Thomas A Kenzie. The )iair-yearly meeting of the All Paints’ Yonng Men s Association for tlie election of olhee-boarers was held in the schoolroom last evening, Alt- Porcival in the chair. After v-ic prelinunary business had been disposed °! the following gentlemen were appointed • -.Mr .lames Kirby, Vice-President; Mr lercy Curbs, .Secretary: Air A. B. Schott, J.ieasurer; and Messrs Ashcroft, De Carle, ami I’crcival, Committee. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the out* going committee.

The programme was a repetition of that of the previous evening, excepting that Miss Hams gave.. “Come back to Erin,” which was a more judicious selection than the song in which we first heard her. A telegram informs us of the sudden death at Nelson of Mr Charles Elliott, who vas some years ago proprietor of the. * Examiner. ’ Mr Elliott was more publicly known as the compiler of the New Zealand ‘Stud Book,’ five volumes of which have been published. In addition to this woi’k deceased had almost ready for publication the first volume of the N. Z. * Turf Register,’ containing a full account of the past season’s racing and a quantity of other valuable information. Mr Elliott was one of the oldest breeders of racing stock in the Colony.

The quarterly meeting of th.a, A.O.F, Court Enterprise, No. 3,990, was held at the Court room of the Douglas Hotel last evening. The attendance was numerous, ihe balance-sheet and auditor's report was read, showing that the increase during the quarter was not so large as usual, owing to the largo amount of sick pay distributed during that period. The following officers were then installed during the next halfyear = “ C - R -V Bro. G. W. Wilkinson; 5.0. R., Bro. W . Ibbotson ; Treasurer, Bro, Secretar y« Bro. T. J. Goodman ; S.W., Bro. W. The health of the retiring and newly-elected officers having been given and responded to, the meeting was brought to a close. S
