CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held to-day; present—the Mayor (in tbe chair), Cra. Isaacs. Gibson, Grant, Beeves, Woodland, Campbell, Quick, Mollison, Brown, Chapman, and Eoborts.

An application from Smith and Anderson for paymerit of 1200 for stamp duty in connection with the Gasworks was referred to the Finance Committee, Ci. Beeves speaking of the excessive amount asked for stamp duty. On a letter being read from Mr Eckhoff, master of the Dunedin Sailors' Home, asking for a lease for fourteen or twenty -one years of the land on which the Home was built for the purpose of maintaining the institution, and offering an annual renal of L2 per foot, Cr. Quick moved that the offer be accepted. The Sailors' Home was a desirable thing, and ought to be encouraged. Cr. Mollisow seconded the motion. Cr. Isaac moved, and Cr. Woodland seconded, " That the land be put up at auction." The amendment was carried. The Finance Committee reported that a request from the National Insurance Company for the Council to exchange a number of Municipal mortgages held by the Company for Municipal debentures, under the Act of last session, had been declined, it beins considered that the proposod exchange would interfere with the Council's financial engagements. The Public Works Committee recommended that Princes street south be raised to permanent level, and kerbed and channelled, the kerbing and channelling not to be done until winter is over. The Gas Committee reported tlat it had been decided t« moke no charge for gas supplied at the lata Carnival in aid of the Otago Benevolent Tnstitutien. A complaint from tbe Committee of the Working Men's Club as to the bad quality of the gas supplied had been referred to the Engineer for report: The Fire Brigade Committee reported that the question of a paid Brigade was under consideration.
