THE DEVIL’S CHAIN.

To the Editor. - SlB, —On reading an article which, appeared in your contemporary the ‘Daily limes’ of the 28th ult. purporting to bo a seriew of Mr Jenkins’s little work, “The Deril’s Chain,” I came to the conclusion that some serious blunder had taken place ih“tbe~internal arrangements of your contemporary’s office —in fact, that the rejected contribution of some incensed member of;the licensed .Victuallers’ Association, who had Committed his wrath to writing, had, in of being thrown into the waste basket, found its way by some mischance into the compositors’ hands, and thus found its way into your contemporary’s columns. On no other supposition oan I account for the appearance of such a production in a newspaper of deservedly high standing and wide circulation. The spirit in which that production is written—the gross ignorance of literature which it betrays in the daring and unfounded general assertions which it makes —that aping of a style of writing which ill becomes -the puny efforts of this would-be reviewer, and even the mere composition of the production itself,' are things which show to any man of ordinary intelligence and -educatißtt, 'as “well a?;ta- the scholar, the gentleman, or the Christian, how unfit the • writer of this attack (for it deserves not the name of review) is for the duty which he has undertaken. —I am, &c., Jeak de St. .Kiakax. • • Dunedin, July 3.
