THE MAYORALTY.
To the Editor.
Sir,—ln replying to Mr Walter's letter, I deprecate the tone in which it is written, and much regret that he should have allowed his passions to betray him into such personal animus as is evinced therein.
If my memory was incorrect as to what he stated in returning thanks when elected, it would have been quite sufficient for him to have said so, and I would possibly not have contradicted him. I may say, hj >weyer, that I have been informed that he did make use of words similar to what I mentioned, and that he stated at his meetings "that he would not come forward for the Mayoralty next year." Perhaps he may also contradict this.
However, it matters nothing to me what promises Mr Walter may have made, the decision will rest with the ratepayers as between him and the other candidates, and the principle as to whether the office should be a lolling one or not must be decided by the ballot. In conclusion, sir, I hope that no personalities will be indulged iu by any of the candidates, and I, for my part, as I have hitherto done, shall avoid them.—l am, &c,
C. S. Reeves, Dunedin, July 1.
