Wblunotos, June 29. The Superintendent of Wellington signed to-day the final order authorising the promoters—Messra Henderson, O'Neill, and Macdonald —to proceed with the construction of the street tramways within this city.
Auckland, June 29. The criminal calendar comprises two cases of burglary, two of robbery with violence, three of larce iy, three of embezzlelnent, one of stealing from premises, one ofstabbing, and two of breaking and entering. '•
New Plymouth, June 29. The telegraph was connected to-day, and the first telegram was sent through at- 1.20. It was from the Deputy-Superintendent' to Sir Julius Vogel, stating that the cordial thanks of the settlers ef Taranaki were tendered him for the union with Wellington, England, and the resfcof the world by telegraph, which was completed by his efforts. In the District Court, Benney, for an Attempted criminal assault on an old lady seventy-five years of age- was sentenced to seven years and a hundred lashes. Gibbons, for larceny, was sentenced to a year and ahalf's imprisonment.
Napier, June 29. At Messrs Routledge and Kennedy's tattle safe yesterday satisfactory prices were realised. There wa3 a good attendance' and keen competition. The Go-ahead's c£rgo sold at the following rates: Store steexs, L 6 to L 9; fat steers, L 9 5s to LlO 6s ;*fa£ heifers (spayed), L 6 10s to L 7 15s; cows, L 4 10s to Ll2; calves (unweaned), 52s 6d.
Christchubch, Jane 30. At a conference of ohairmen of road boards held yesterday it was resolved that it is desirable that the road Boards of this Proi vince should have an opportunity trt consider the new Local Government Bill before it becomes law, and officers, were appointed with a view of calling another meeting when the matured proposals of the Government are before the public. The Canterbury Agricultural Association have acceeded to a request to appoint judges for certain, -classes of stock at the Jtfdrtn Otago Association's Bhow, provided the latter association will do the same for the annual show held here in November. The calendar for the criminal session contains nine cases, which include charges of manslaughter, bigamy, arson, horse-steal-ing, forgery, burglary, larceny, and obtaining money under false pretences. ?

Oamaeu, June 80; > An attempted to commit rape on Miss Suphia Ferens waß made last night by a jnan named Thomas Godfrey. It appears that Miss Ferens was proceeding home along the main north road when <Jodfrey seized h.w, 4rted a handkerchief round her mouth,'and attempted to drag her to a creek. He threatened to murder her if she shouted. In Joing towards the creek he stumbled' and rlelL when his victim ran to a neighboring j house. The police were informed of the cir- | cumstanceß, and within ah hour after the attempted offence Inspector M'Cluskey had the man in the lock-up. The ease comes on aVbne o'clock to-day.
_ 2 25 p.m. The evidence against Godfrey, for assftalting Miss Ferens, was very clear. The latter gave her -evidence in a straightforward manner. Accused was remanded till tomorrow at 11 o'clock.
