A telegram from Townsville reports the .safe arrival of the cable steamer Edinburgh, and all going on well.
Our Government is communicating with others, including New Zealand, in reference to sharing the expense of a steamer to run bi-monthly Ironi Java to Port Darwin during the break in the cable. *
The Suez mail has just arrived at Adelaide.
A, French barque, which has arrived at Newcastle from Noumea, reports the escape of political prisoners to be of almost daily occurrence. Eight recently escaped in a boat, and have not since been heard of.' Subsequently five others escaped, but were recaptured after three days' exposure sit sea. During tho passage Pf the immigrant ship Windsor Castle W Brisbane a portion of the crew mutinied i>y res ' cuing a comrade from irons. ThC mutiny was quelled with the assistance of the immigrants.
Extensive floods have occurred in the Huon district, Tasmania, causing great damage and loss of stock.
