James Watson v. William Statham.—Claim Of L2 9s 4d, for goods supplied.—Plaintiff that the defendant called upon him last night, and gave- him LI, promising to pay the balance by monthly instalments.— Defendant was ordered to pay Ll per month, in default fourteen days' imprisonment. Drummond and Watson v. F. E. Tener.— This was a judgment summons for L4O 4s 9d, Mr Mouat appeared for plaintiffs, and Mr A. Bathgate for defendant.—The alleged ' fraud consisted in defendants' having purchased white lead, 4c, just before filing his schedule of bankruptcy, and then having sold the goods without accounting for the proceeds.—Defendant deposed that the lead had been used in large contracts. After his bankruptcy he called a meeting of his creditors, but no oue appeared.—His Worship adjourned the case for four weeks. For general information, he (his Worship) stated that the Imprisonment for Debt Act waa not intended as a compulsitor to recover bad debts. For ordinary trade accounts the Act could not be put into operation at all, imprisonment for debt in such cases being abolished. It only applied to cases where a man. refused to pay for board or for lodging. The Act did not apply to trade debts at ail. Dunning Bros. v. John Mowat.—Claim L2 9s 2d, for goods supplied.—Plaintiff stated that he furnished the goodß in question, mostly vegetables, at Mrs MouaVs request.—Defendwt pleaded that he had given orders that Mrs Mouat should not be supplied.—The case was adjourned for a week for Mrs Mouat's production. J. T. Mackerras (as trustee in the estate of Thomas and Berryman) v. Louis M«Dermott.—Claim L2 4s, for goods aupplied. Mr Denniston appeared for plaintiff. -r-Defendant disputed part of the debt, and said he had paid the balance.—The case iraa adjourned for a week to give defendant An opportunity of recovering a cheque which he said he had paid.
