THE RAILWAY BETWEEN WAITAKI AND WAIMATE.
A public meeting, convened by His Worship the Mayor, in accordance with a numerously signed requisition, " in order to give an opportunity for discussing the best means of bringing about the prompt completion of the line (of railway between Waitaki and Waimate), and making the most urgent representations to the Government, and the members for the district in the General Assembly, to that end," took place on Monday eveniag. At the commeneement of the meeting there were about one hundred Sersons present, but the attendance increased uring the proceedings to between 150 and 200: We take from the 'N. 0. Times ' the resolutions that were adopted. That in the opinion of this meeting it is highly desirable that railway communication between the Waitaki and the presently completed portion of the Canterbury line should be established at the earliest possible date. That it be urgently represented to the Government that the delay which has already occurred is a serious injury to the settlers of the district through which the line will pass, by debarring them from availing themselves «f the port of Oamarn as 9 market for theirproduce.and has also a prejudicial effect on the tiade of Oamarn, which so soon as railway communication is established, will become the entrepot of commerce for a large district on the north side of the Waitaki River. That the meeting understands that the formation •f the uncompleted section is ready for plate laying, and that large quantities of rails and sleepers are now lying at Oamarn and Waitaki, and therefore urges upon the Government the expediency of ' calling for tenders for the completion of the work at the earliest possible date, so that through communication may be established before next shearing season.
