Public Notices. . .ROM the ' Supplementary News,' printed 1 and Mitchell, during the Fete in aid of the Benevolent Asylum, on the" Premises of MfrS3rs Guthrie and Larnach, May 24,1876.—0ur Local Industries.—Messrs H alien -tern Bros , of the New Zealand Clothing Factory, following the example of some of the lar.e manufacturers at Home, and more especially with a -view of preventing the importation of English clothing, intend opening an extensive Retail Establishment, for the sale of their manufacture 9. For this purpose they have fitted np commodious premises at the corner of the Octagon and Princes street, which are to be opened on Saturday, May 27. This branch will be under the immediate management of Mr laurenson, and under the Eersonal supervision of Mr B. Hallenstein, the ead of the N.Z. firm. . Messrs' Hallenstein Bros., under the management of Mr Anderson, a partner in the wholesale and factory branch, started the New Zealand Clothing Factory about two and a half years ago. They commended on a comparatively small scale; at' present they employ between 200 and 300 hands. They have had to overcome «nany difficulties and much prejudice, but now their goods, as will be seen from the ships' manifests, are bein? sent to all parts of New Zealand. In Dunedin only they have found persistent opposition on the part of the larger houses who are glutting this market with imported goods, and, no doubt, the retailers find it to their advantage to push these in, preference to local manufactures. The proprietors of the New Zealand Clothing Factory have, therefore, very judiciously decid*d to introduce their manufactures direct to the large consuming population of Imnedin; and, in order to do so effectually, they have determined to sell a single garment at the wholesale price. The selling price is to be marked in plain figures on every article, from which iio abatement will be made. The business is to be conducted strictly on the cash p-inciple, and all goods IT article , or the money returned. As will be seen from the garments presented by the New Zealand Clothing Faotory in aid of the Benevolent Asylum, and now exhibited in this building, they are superior in style and quality, and at a proportionately lower price than anything that can be imported. But, irrespective of all these advantages, it is to the interest of everyone to support an industry which employs local labor, and is a direct benefit to the butcher, baker, farmer, mechanic, shopkeeper, merchant, and to ail sections of the community.
