THE PULPIT AND TEMPERANCE.
To the Editor, Sir, — 1 was much pleased to see it stated by your porteppdndent/ that' therein even one temperance pulpit in Dunedin ! That is-what we want. The churches should he the real temperance societies. I have indeed very little faith in any efforts at reform independent of the. endorsement and co-operation of Christianchurches. Whiskeys Christianity has beentried long enough ! Tfe is a comparative failure. Try the temper-:. ance article, and it will be found a complete success. The -vicious influence of strong drink neutralises to % great extent the glorious results of gospel preaching. Strange that tippling preachers and tippling Christians'fail to see' this. They doubtless are fully aware of it, but don’t like to abandon the debasing habit of tippling that greatly lessens their usefulness. The clergy are undoubtedly to blame for a great deal of our suffering, misery, and degradation.—l am, &c., - . Gr.T.
