Taiaroa returned from Timarn at seven this morning, and steamed alongside the ship Margaret Galbraith to discharge 1,836 sacks of grain. She left Timarn at 8 p.m., and had strong S.E. winds to arrival. The New Zealand Company’s steamer Wellington, from the Northern ports, arrived alongside the railway pier at 11.80 this morning, She left theManukan at 2.30 p.m. on the 3rd, arrived at Taranaki at 8.15 a.m. on the 4th; left again at 10 25 a.m., and arrived at Nelson at 7 a.m. on the sth; left again at 9 p.m., and arrived at Fiction at 4.15 a.m. on. the 6th; left again at 5.10 a.m., and arrived at Wellington at 9.45 a.m.; left again at 3.40 p.m., and arrived at Lyttelton at 0,30 p.m. on the 7th; left again at 4.30 pm. same day, arriving as above, having experienced strong variable winds through the passage. The first steam dredge that ever left Glasgow for the Australian Colonies—the Ersklue—arrived safely in Lyttelton harbor at 4 p.m. on Saturday last. She will be used in dredging the harbor. The following description of her is taken from yesterday’s Christchurch 4 Press ’■ 44 Her length is 186 ft with 22ft beam, and her depth of hold Bft; she is rigged ad a three-masted schooner; and has proved herself a splendid sea boat during her run ont. Ou y drawing'3ft 6in forward, and 7ft aft, and hayjng one hundred of. coal on board, her adaptability ' for" dredging in shallow water must be evident to all. Her engines ore a duplicate of those in the hoppers, with the exception of a governor, being compound surface condensers of' 35-horse power; her consumption of coal was four tons daily (about), and tbis propelled her in: fair weather at an average speed of six knots. Her machinery for dredging will have to be fitted heie', so it will probably be some considerable time before she is iu working order. When the gear is fixed she will be Worked by the fallowing means:—The buckets ore fastened to an endless chain, worked by the engines through spur and level wheel gearing; there are thirty-six buckets on tha chain, and they are capable of lifting 200 tons of staff from the bottom per hour, thus being able to fill each hopper barge iu that space of time. The dredge had all her machinery fixed whilst lying iu the Clyde, ami was tried in the presence of Mr H. Turpin, the ohi-'f engineer, and successfully raised over 200 tons within the hour. The mud, when raised, is delivered by a shoot from the aide of th-.- vessel into the hopper barges.
