WEST TAIERI.

C From our own Correspondent )

# • June 8, An accident, which might have been attended with fatal consequences; happened to a man named James Qodvwn, who is in the employ of Mr Cox,- storekeeper, Outran*. The circumstances: of the case are as follows; —Mr Godwin was out duck-shooting in the Taieri River gorge, when he happened to see some wild cattle, which are both tierce and dangerous in this place, for they will rush, you as soon os they observe yon. He thereupon put a bullet on top of the eharge of . shot in his' gun, which was a doublebarrelled piece. As the cattle came closer he tired at them, but the gun burst just above the breech, blowing off the top of his left thumb, and also wounding him in the cheek. Dr M'Brearty dressed the wounds, which are progressing favorably. .The ballet being too large for the barrel was the cause of the accident.

The pheasant shooting season having commenced these birds are having' a rather lively _time of it, but are not as yet being materially reduced in numbers. Mr Gilmour has succeeded in bagging four, and Mr J. Iveson three. There are a very large proportion of hea birds this season. One Chins pheasant I saw shot by Mr Iveson was a magnificent bird. A few hares are to be seen, also a few partridges, but the latter birds are not numerous^
