The Wellington correspondent of , the Melbourne * Argus,’ whose effusions are not unknown in this part' of 'the Colony, is good" enough to say of Sir Julius Vogel“ He is/ by the way, much improved, and I think toned down—grown more prudent and lessimpnlsive—by his recent, visit to Europe.” A Dunedin telegram in the Times’ states that the proprietors of the ‘Guardian,’ feeling aggrieved at a-letter' that appeared in the ‘Bruce Herald’ of Tuesday last, from its Dunedin correspon d dent, are said to have placed the matter in* their, lawyer’s,hands, with a view Of initiating legal proceedings, if the. statements in> the letter will sapport an- action. The takings at the Carnival yesterday amounted to L 163, which brings the gross total up to L1,26Q. It is anticipated that the Bruce auction will be finished to-night/ When the Artillery Band will play a selection of dance mUsic. Madame Goddard was’about to start for New Orleans, thence, to the great cities of the west. She was to return to England in June, at which time she will have been on her travels three years and three months. Madame Goddard’s present intention is to remain one year in Engird and the continent of Europe; then to return to California to reside. Whether her 1; nglish admirers will allow this is prbbablv doubtful. ! >
It is related by Tasmanian papers that there will not be a birthday ball given by the Governor this year. The reason given is that owing to the parsimony of Paruameht in cutting down his Excellency’s salary to so low an amount, the usual hospitalities and festivities at residence have to be kept within ayery narrow circle. When the Tasmanians got Mr Weld for Governor they thought the wealthy New Zealander would keep up the dignity of former Governors at his own expense ; but it seems Mr Weld, very properly, will not inaugurate a style of living to keep up which might be difficult to a Governor who had his salary alone to depend upon. * If what the London correspondent of the *S. M. Herald * writes be true, ..which very few people will''believe, the dilys of Salamanders are at end, He says that in Sweden there has been constructed , a suit meant to protect the wearer against any danger of fire. The: whole suit consists of two suits over each other, with a space between them, whioh is filled with water, that by means of pipes is continually received and kept eool. Another pipe leads into the head case, which gives constantly fresh air to the wearer. I He. new invention is particularly usefukior saying life and important things out of rooms that are enclosed by burning walls, &c., and it is only to be hoped that this instrument may get everywhere known an i used for the benefit of humanity. A great construction-of wood all wetted with petroleum has been lit; the man who tried, the suit went up to the top in the midst of enormous flames ; went down on stone steps that were placed ipside, and after the wood had burnt aowa'to half the height the man was seen moving about quite comfortably, without seeming to havelbeen in the least inconvenienced By the enormous heat which must have surrounded him for some time.
