THE CARNIVAL.
To the Editor. Sib, —It was a matter of very great sur prise to mo, as it must have been to any of the public who attended the Carnival, to see that the gross proceeds, as given in this morning’s ‘Times,’ were so much out of proportion to the immense throng assembled thereat. The amount taken at the gates, including afternoon and evening, was only Ll7l 2s fid, equal to 1,369 visitors at 2s fid, the price charged for admission, whilst the number given as present between 8 and 9 p.m. was 3,000, which, if anything, would be rather under than over the mark, to say nothing of those who attended in the afternoon only. Were the other 1,631 all on the free list ? If so, more shame for them. Or can the powers that be give the reason why ? If the above figures are correct, the actual result of yesterday’s Carnival is certainly far short of what it appeared it would be, and many “would like to know, you know.” —I am, etc.. Disappointed. Dunedin, May 25. [Our correspondent should recollect that the sum of Ll7l represents the cash takings at the door only. We are in a position to state that a large number of people were admitted by family, season, and day tickets, purchased outside.— Ed. ‘E. S.’]
