Public Kotfeca. '■ . IV tj ijj.i ■ »u ■ ..ii s PROM the * Supplementary News,* printed byFergusson and Mitchell diping the Fete in aid of the Benevolent Asylum, oh the Premises of Messrs Guthrie and Lurnach, May 24. 1876. —Our I ocal Indiutiies.— Messrs Hallen tein Bros , of the New Zealand Cloth mg Factory, following the example of some of the lore manufacturers at Home, and more especially with a view of preventing the importitionof English clothing, intend opening an extensive Ketail Establishment, fur the sale of their manufacture'. For th : s purpose they have fitted np commodious pr<n)ises at the corner of the Octagon and Princes street, which are to be opened on Saturday, May 27. this branch will be under the immediate management of Mr l.aurenson, and under the Bmal supervision of Mr B. Hallenstein, the of. me N.Z. firm. Messrs Hallenstein Bros , under the management of Mr Anderson, a partner in the wholesale and factory b-anch, started the New Zealand Clothing Factory about two and a half years ago. They commenced on a comparatively small scale; at present they employ between 200 and 300 hands. They have had to overcome many difficulties and much prejudice, but now thengoods, as will be seen from the ships’ manifests, are being sent to all parts of New Zealand. In Uunedin only they have found persistent opposition on the part of the larger houses who are glutting this market with im ported goods, and, no doubt, the retailers find it to their advantage to push these in preference to local manufactures. The proprietors of the New Zealand Clothing Factory have, therefore, very judiciously decided to introduce their manufactures di-ect to the large consuming population of bunedin ; and, in order to do so effectually, they have determined to sell a single garment at the wholesale price. The selling price is to be marked in plain figures on eveiy article, from which i o abatement will be made. The business is to be conducted stnctlv on the cash principle, and all goods must be for on delivery, but any article not found suitable may be exchanged, or the money returned. As will be seen from the g.irm nts presented by the New' Zealand Clothing Factory in aid of the Benevolent Asylum, and now exhibited in this building, they are superior in style and quality, and at a proportionately lower price than any tiring that can be imported, but, irrespective of all these advantages, it is.to the interest of every one to support an industry which employs local labor, and is a direct benefit to the butcher baker, fanner, mechanic, shopkeeper, merchant, and to all sections of the community.
