INTERPROVINCIAL CHESS TOURN AMENT.

The chess match by telegraph between twelve Otago and a like number of Auckland players, being the first contest for a silver cup eiven by Mr Atkins, of Auckland, commenced in the Provincial Council Hall library last evening. Mr Upton umpired for Dunedin, and Mr Nixon (who did duty for the Auckland players in the last match) for Auckland. Mr Day transmitted the messages from Dunedin, and although each message had to pass through eight hands, there being four transmitting stations—Auckland, Napier, Wellington, and Blenheim—some of the messages came through from Auckland in less than a minute. The players were pitted as follows n' says ay . ‘ A. Morton 2. Monat B. Stewart 3. Janion C. Lusk c’ . , D. Heather 6. Gnmstoad E. Williams 6. Da m F. Brodie Paul O, Jakius 8. Wilson H. Eice ,?■ Singer I. Qorrie 10. Goldston J. Smidt K. Dandon 12. Monders L. Garland It uas arranged that play should be discontinued at eight o’clock this morning in the event of the match not being concluded, and at that hour it, was found that only two victories had been scored, both by Auckland players—Messrs Jakins and Garland. Otago claimed three victories in instances where they considered that their chance of winning was a decidedly good one in consequence of the unreasonable time and protracted delajr caused by their opponents in recording a move. Auckland replied, expressing its willingness to continue the match this evening, but the offer was declined as unreasonable by the Otago player. Thus it is that the matter now stands.
