FROM the ‘ Supplementary News,’ printed by Fergusson and Mitchell during the Fete in aid of the Benevolent Asylum, on the Premises of Messrs Guthrie and Larnach, May 24, 1876.—0ur Local Industiies.—Messrs H alien-stein Bros , of the New Zealand Cloth mg Factory, following the example of some of the lar.e manufacturers at Home, and more especially with a view of preventing the importation of English clothing, intend opening an extensive Retail Establishment, for the sale of their manufactures. For this purpose they have fitted up commodious premises at the corner of the Octagon and Princes street, w ich are to be opened on Saturday, May 27. This branch will be under the immediate management of Mr J aurenson, and under the Cmal supervision of Air B. Hallenstein, the of the N.Z. firm. Messrs Hallenstein Bros., under the management of Air Anderson, a partner in the wholesale and factory branch, started the New Zealand Clothing Factory about two and a half years ago. They commenced on a comparatively small scale; at present they employ between 200 and 300 hands. They have had to overcome many difficulties and much prejudice, buc now their goods, as will be seen from the ships' manifest, are being sent to all parts of New Zealand. In Dunedin only they have found persistent opposition on the part of the larger houses who are glutting this market with im ported goods, and, no doubt, the retailers find it to their advantage to push these in preference to local manufactures. Ihe proprietors of the iS ew Zealand Clothing Factory have, therefore, very judiciously decided to introduce their inzuiufacturcs direct to the hirge cousum* iug population of Dunedin; and, in order to do so effectually, they have determined to sell a single garment at the wholesale price. The selling price is to be marked in plain figures on eve:y article, from which to abatement will be made. The business is to be conducted strictly on the cash p.'inciple, and all goods must be paid_ for on delivery, but any article not found suit ible may be exchanged, or the money returned. As will be seen from the gann nts presented by the New Zealand Clothing Factory in aid of the Benevolent Asylum, and now; exhibited in this building, they at e superior in style and quality, and at a proportionately lower price than anything that can be imported. But, irrespective of all these advantages, it is to the interest of everyone to support an industry which employs local labor, and is a direct benefit to the butcher baker, farmer, mechanic, shopkeeper merchant, and to all sections of the community.
